France Use Late Run To Down Russia

France used a 17-0 run over the final 6:28 to come back and beat Russia 71-62 in a final warm-up before the quarter-finals of the U18 European Championship Men.

Mouhammadou Jaiteh had 13 points and 10 rebounds, William Howard collected 15 points, five rebounds and five steals while Livio Jean-Charles scored 12 points for France, who improved to 4-1 in Qualifying Round Group F.

Aleksandr Gudumak scored 16 points to lead Russia, who dropped to 1-4 in the group. Denis Levshin had 15 points and Gleb Goldyrev hit for 11 points in a losing effort.

France scored the first 10 points of the game and led 12-2. Russia found their way into the game and trailed 24-16 after one quarter.

Russia went on a 13-0 run to start the second quarter for a 29-24 lead. And the Russians remained ahead at halftime, 39-36.

Russia pushed the advantage to 47-41 but watched France close the third quarter on an 11-4 run for a 52-51 lead.

Russia once again started the fourth quarter strong with an 11-2 surge for a 62-54 lead with 6:28 remaining. But the French defense put the clamps on the Russians and did not allow a point the rest of the way.
